It was raining quite a bit the day before and I wasn't sure we were goiong to shoot but the clouds lifted for us in the morning and we were able to have a beautiful morning perfect for a hapai session. This is Tony and Donna's 1st baby. They are having a girl and if you haven't guessed her name already it's , AVA:) Since this shoot baby Ava has arrived, born 3/6/11 @ 2:05 pm, 8 lbs 6 oz.

I am excited to meet and photograph her soon.

The beautiful baboon.....but scary creature surprised me with his photogenic abilities:) When I approached the glass wall, he turned and looked at me. Then he stood up and moved closer to me right up to the wall. It was pretty amazing! He just stared at me while a I was clicking away, so much I started creeping out at how fixated his eyes were on me. Then he opened his mouth so wide and those teeth!!!!!!!!!!!!(Last photo) OMG! He would close his mouth, look at me and do it again maybe 4 times. By that point I was like.................is he hungry?????or is he telling me I look like food to him? Idk but it was exciting:)

Saturdays are girls only day for the ladies in my house! Unless I'm flying to Maui. My girls usually have tahitian practice on Saturdays in Kahala. Then we spend the rest of the day doing whatever they feel like doing. I had a senior session scheduled that day at 4pm at Wai'alae Beach Park. So the girls hung out in the water, which is really a good place for kids. They also did some sea shell hunting, one of their fav hobbies.

These are my HAPPY MOMENTS!!!!!

This young and beautifully exotic looking creature is Latai. We are starting a model portfolio for her and this was our first shoot. This shoot was put together at the last minute but I am so glad we did it. I met Latai through my niece, Ki'ilani who also likes to model for me from time to time but not anymore because she lives in Alaska now..... boohoo :( Anywho, isn't she gorgeous??

Kamaile had baby O on Valentine's Day,so he is literally a Love Child~ She has 4 boys now!!!! I would so love to get all of her boys in a session!

It's funny how you meet people and find out that you are connected in one way or another. When Kamiki contacted me about doing her wedding both her and I had no idea that I knew her mom. The wonderful FACEBOOK has helped people connect so, our relationship started off to a good start.

Keala + Kamiki were a joy and a pleasure to capture in their engagement shots. I love to see young love. It honestly makes me miss that young love feeling I had with my husband 20 years ago......... It's the BEST feeling ever!

Meet {baby k}. He was born on 1/29/2010 and quite attentive for a 7 day old newborn. I actually drove all the way out to Waianae to meet baby K and his ohana. I wanted to capture some sleeping shots of him but he insisted to stay awake instead...lol! He's definitely a charmer. His mommy Cristine says that when he's awake he thinks it's time to eat and he ate quite a bit while I was there.

Watabe Wedding Dresses = Mock Wedding Shoot { Maui Photography}

One day while cleaning my father inlaw's house I found this huge, grey lawn garbage bag. When I opened it up I saw 2 beautiful wedding dresses. It was obviously not taken cared of and I immediately took it and found a more proper place to put it in the house. Well, I found out that my sister-in law had a friend that gave these dresses to her a few years ago and she worked at Watabe Wedding Corporation in Kahului.

So, what better way to make use of it............in a shoot! I got some pretty ladies to model theses dresses and we did a mock wedding dress shoot! Whatever you call it.............hehehehehe:) The dresses were gorgeous and the girls had fun wearing and modeling in it! So, here's a few from that shoot~

Mt.Tantalus || Puu Ualakaa Park || City of Honolulu, HI

Since moving to Oahu in July we haven't done much on the island. We spent a great deal of time adjusting to a new school, new home, new island. So, this past weekend I took the kiddos to Mt. Tantalus and Pu'u Ualaka'a Park. My husband and I used to go here quite a bit before the children came along. It only takes 10 minutes to get there and views are beautiful. It was a grey, cloudy over cast kind of a day but still amazing~Of course I couldn't head back down without getting some shots of the beautiful City of Honolulu.

My son~ always trying to look cool for the camera.

My daughter says that she looks like an orange peacock in this one!

It makes my heart melt to see them playing like this and getting along;)

This tree was huge! It reminds me of that tree in the Harry Potter movie. So, of course my son was attached to it.

I'm a sucker for those eyes.........she gets away with a lot of stuff too. She's our MANIPULATOR! Gotta watch out for this one:)

New Backgrounds!! Hawaii Photography

So, I have been on Oahu for a few months now and I need to build my clientele here. I don't have much $$$$ for advertising. We moved to Oahu so that my husband can further his studies at UH Manoa. He is studying to be a Nurse Practitioner. The program is 3 years and during the first year he is not allowed to work. So, we are having to pinch every penny. No money for advertising makes it difficult to grab new clientele where nobody knows you~ I really rely heavily on networking through facebook, friends and family.

Which brings me to my new backgrounds. Since I don't have much I find ways to work around my financial crunch. Well backgrounds are very expensive, so is a backdrop stand, both of which I do not have. I need to be creative at this point, right? Right! So, I bought a Commercial Grade Garment Rack for $60.00. I found these great backgrounds like the one shown here with my always beautiful model, Patience! Believe it or not these are from Kmart..............cost $14.00each and this is the first one out of three that I bought..............and the best part is ???????> THEY ARE SHOWER CURTAINS!!

SUCCESS I THINK ;~) Tell me what you think......These images were taken in my home, with natural lighting, no flash and edited with CS3.

2009 in one word, "WOWZERS!". It has flown right by and I have been truly blessed. My family is the best! They support what I love to do , which is .......... be a wife to my husband, a mother to my children and have the best job in the world! My sisters have also been such a great support network for me..........they don't hesitate when I ask for their assistance on shoots! I am grateful and love them for that!

One of the things on my list to work on is updating this blog as often as I can! This is a recap of the wonderful people I have had the pleasure of meeting for the first time, friends & family I haven't seen in ages and my life all wrapped up into this one post for 2009.

Hi guys! Sorry I have been slackin on the blog! It's been unreal busy this year for me! I have sooo much to share with you. Past photo shoots with some really neat and wonderful people. Some new people I met and some old time friends from many years ago. I want to make sure I get them all in before the end of year.

Whew~~~~~~I have been so busy that my poor blog and website need some major updating. But, first let's see if I can catch up on the blog!

Cristina & Art flew to Maui from Seattle, Washington to get married on our beautiful beaches. The wedding took place at the very popular Secret Cove beach in Makena. They have been together now for 11 years and finally tied the knot to make it official. Watching them interact with each other, you could tell they knew each other so well. That made the whole wedding relaxing and enjoyable just being around their friends and family. The family then headed to their private rental home where the reception took place in the back yard.

I soooo love this one with all the sun rays!!!!! It's different, but I love it!

Real Emotions = True Love

I love when they cry.......it made my eye glasses fog up from my own tears:)

Cabatu Ohana~ Hawaii Family Photographer

The Cabatu's are one of the sweetest families ever! I have known them for 5 years since our children went to preschool together. They have three adorable little girls, yup! Daddy is sooo lucky to have all these lassies in his house! Well, when mommy ,Elena called to ask if I could capture her family, I was ecstatic until she said they were moving to Utah! Utah?

So, we did family portraits at the beach during sunset since that is one of Maui's favorite attractions! The sunset was incredible. It was a perfect and beautiful day!

You guys will be missed and I wish you the very best as your life carries you to Utah.

Why are Professional Photographers so expensive?

I always get questioned why so much money? My Sessions per hour includes the photographer's time, experience in creating unique images, equipment use and travelling time. This article might better explain what goes into my work:

Why are Professional Photographers so expensive?

In this digital age where everyone has digital cameras, scanners and home "photo printers", when people upload their photos to a local drug store website and pick them up a few hours later, we hear this all the time - How in the world do Professional Photographers charge $55 for an 8x10 when they cost just $1.50 at the drug store? Here's why.Simply put, you're not just paying for the actual photograph, you're paying for time and expertise. First, let's look at the actual time involved. If you don't read this entire page, at least read this first part.
For a two hour portrait session:- one hour of travel to and from the session- two hours of shooting- 30 minutes of setup, preparation, talking to the client etc.- 30 minutes to load the photos onto a computer (2 - 4 Gb of data)- 30 minutes to back up the files on an external drive- 3 - 4 hours of Photoshop time including cropping, contrast, color, sharpening, saving a copy for print and a copy for the internet and backing up the edited photographs - 2 - 3 hours to talk to the client, answer questions, receive their order and payment, order their prints, receive and verify prints, package prints, schedule shipment and drop package off at Fed Ex.- For local customers, we also print a set of all of their photos, and meet them at our studio to review the photos and place their order. Meeting and travel time averages 2 hours. You can see how one two hour session easily turns into more than ten hours of work from start to finish. So when you see a Photographer charging a $200 session fee for a two hour photo shoot, you are not paying them $100 / hour.

For an eight hour wedding:- I won't bore you with the details, but an eight hour wedding typically amounts to at least two to three full 40 hour work weeks worth of time. Again, if they are charging you $4,000 for an eight hour wedding, you are not paying them $500 / hour.
Now for the expertise.
Shooting professional photography is a skill, acquired through years of experience. Even though a quality camera now costs under $2,000 taking professional portraits involves much more than a nice camera.
Most Professional Photographers take years to go from buying their first decent camera to making money with their photography. In addition to learning how to use the camera itself, there is a mountain of other equipment involved, as well as numerous software programs used to edit and print photographs, run a website etc.
And let's not forget that you actually have to have people skills, be able to communicate, make people comfortable in front of the camera - and posing people to make them look their best in a photograph is a skill all by itself.
Think of it this way - the next time you pay $X to get your hair done, a pair of scissors only costs $1.50. But you gladly pay a lot more to hire a Professional.
What about the cheap studios at the mall?
Please don't compare us to the chain store studios. But if you must, consider all of the time and work that we put into our photographs, compared to what they do. Good luck getting a two hour photo shoot at a chain store. Not to mention they won't come to the beach! And of course, look at our work compared to theirs. You get what you pay for.
The truth is, most of the mall and chain store studios lose money. In fact, in 2007 Wal-Mart closed 500 of their portrait studios because of the financial drain they were putting on the company. What the chain stores bet on is that you'll come in for some quick and cheap photos, and while you're there, you'll also spend $200 on other things. They don't have to make money, they are just there to get you in the door.

Conclusion
We hope that those who have taken the time to read this page will have a better understanding of why professional photographs cost so much more than the ones that you get from your local drug store.

I have been on Oahu for about 6 weeks now! I do miss Maui a whole heck of a lot because I have tremendous friends and my beautiful ohana is there. I have gotten quite a few requests for photo sessions on Maui and well guys HERE’S YOUR CHANCE!

Pimentel Family {Hawaii Photographer}

I have known the Pimentel family for a few years. Our children went to the same preschool. But, this is the first time I got to photograph them and they are absolutely gorgeous!!!! They were FUN, ENERGETIC and FULL OF LIFE* We had such a blast and the location was to die for. It gave that Twilight feeling.....ohhhhhh.......if only I had Robert Pattinson as a backdrop.....or a prop! Thanks for the fun Jennifer! Hope to do it again:) There are soooooo many favorite images from this shoot that I will have to try to limit myself. Don't know if I can but I will try!Check out this stunning family!

I should have made a seperate post just for her because this young lady is not only beautiful but smart. I got some beautiful shots of her. Tiare just graduated from high school and is off to college. I wish her the best!

I made the head piece with stuff I found there while I was waiting for them. It was the perfect touch!

I admit I think all babies are cute! However, if you ask my husband, he says they are all ALIENS! Baby K was no exception, I mean in the cute category! He never fussed unless hungry or uncomfortable. He loved being outside though, never woke up! A piece of cake! His first-time parents Lani & Keola were willing to do anything I asked!
